One of these reasons is that the demand for better words has given us more thought in our hymns than a large group can carry when they sing. You know brains in lyrics are at the present time singularly destructive of pure vocalization, especially when the thought constantly changes. We really think rather than sing the best words. That is, the intellectual pulls back genuine power of song. It is needless to say that this reason for poor singing is limited to only a few churches of advanced stamp. Another reason more broadly holding good is that there are too many small variations in hymn harmonizations. So different in detail are many of the hymns that one is no sooner launched on, say, the bass part, before you--the bass singer--discover that things are not going well and you drop out discouraged. In other words, the arrangers have several times changed your part in a given hymn in the interest of simplicity or complexity or history or something else and have arranged you out of it. Until there is either established uniformity or unison singing, our music in the churches will remain urgeless and non-expressive. A Short Talk About Talking Machines The nasal impudence of the phonograph has passed. Requiescat in pace. A new quality is here. Even it will have to be improved. We are arriving, however, in spite of handicaps of materials. The greatest force of the talking machine is the democratizing and educational influence.
